Commissioner Clay-Flores’ CommentsWith your support, we will continue to make Precinct 1 the place we live, work, pray, play, serve, and have access to all facets that our constituents need. This is part of what makes Precinct 1 our home that we all enjoy and love. From touring construction of San Pedro Creek in Southtown, to filtering calls about the long enduring Talley Rd construction on the Northwest part of the Precinct, from supporting our local military veterans and events, to working with law enforcement and McDuff the Crime Dog, from attending the opening of a new ESD 6 (Emergency Services District) in Sandy Oaks, to speaking at neighborhood association/HOA meetings at Del Webb in Alamo Ranch and throughout our Precinct, we are busy advocating for you. As it is still early in my term, we are building our database of neighborhood associations/HOAs to attend. If you'd like for me to visit yours, please contact us.

The County budget was just passed, and I wanted to make sure that we were able to add extra positions for our County Constables. We also supported funding to keep Deputy Sheriff patrol officers in our neighborhoods. I’m really excited that we budgeted $17 million for our Precinct 1 Parks and Civic Center. Also included in the budget is a ten year plan for a total of $227 million for flood control, roads, creeks and trails in our Precinct.
This newsletter is a summer/fall edition, and will close with staff recognition and contact info for the Precinct 1 team. Please reach out to get to know us, as we continue to get to know you through neighborhood association/HOAs, community events, calls, emails, and social media. Please keep in touch and let's keep wearing our masks. Thank you!

Commissioner Clay-Flores with Mariachis after receiving her Johnson & Johnson vaccine
|
Cinco de Mayo Vaccination ClinicCommissioner Clay-Flores hosted a COVID-19 vaccination community event at the University Health Zarzamora Clinic on the South Side. On May 5th, which happens to be the Commissioner’s birthday, healthcare workers administered the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Attendees celebrated receiving their vaccine and Cinco de Mayo with vegan tamales, birthday cake, the Spurs Hype Squad, and were serenated by Mariachi Las Alteñas. We want to thank our sponsor, Linebarger Attorneys At Law (Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLP).

It was important to Commissioner Clay-Flores to support, and herself receive, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in order to assure constituents that it was safe. Upon getting her shot she exclaimed, “I feel great!” Since the event, the fully vaccinated percentage of the eligible Bexar County population has climbed to 76.1% as of October 27, 2021. This is good news. We are in a better place, as cases are also showing a slight decline. Nevertheless, keep wearing your mask, and let's continue to protect our loved ones and those with whom we come in contact. COVID-19 vaccine booster shots are available for the Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson/Janssen COVID-19 vaccine recipients who have completed their first series of vaccines at least 6 months ago. According to the CDC, those that can receive the booster are 65 years and older, or are 18 years old who live in long-term care or high-risk settings, have underlying medical conditions, or work in high-risk settings. For locations of where to receive booster shots, see the listing at University Health System website https://www.universityhealthsystem.com/health-wellness/coronavirus-covid19/vaccine.

$20,000 Allocation for Juneteenth Celebration and Official County HolidayJuneteenth (commemorating the emancipation of slaves) has long been celebrated in the African-American community, but this holiday has remained overlooked by many Americans. Commissioner Clay-Flores secured approval for $20,000 to the Dream Big Scholarship Fund for their second Annual Juneteenth Community Block Party/Fair and scholarship program. The event is held in downtown San Antonio and aims to connect the community with vital opportunities and resources ranging from education and business to health and wellness. In addition to those resources, attendees of this year’s festivities enjoyed live music, over 70 food vendors, and multiple inflatable bounce houses. Furthermore, Commissioner Clay-Flores advocated for Juneteenth as a County holiday. It is a great feat that it was passed this past month at Commissioner's Court, and next year Juneteenth will officially be a Bexar County holiday!

Celebrations of Traditions Pow Wow We were honored to be one of the sponsors for the “Celebrations of Traditions Pow Wow” this past summer. It was a fun family day at Mission Park II and free to the community! What a great event to learn and share about American Indian traditions and culture. In addition to taking in the traditional dances, admiring the beautiful regalia, and meeting new friends, there was also an opportunity to shop the crafts-work available for purchase. And let's not forget the tasty fry bread! If you have not been to this celebration, please visit the United San Antonio Pow Wow website for information on future events!

Fiesta Medal Food DriveCommissioner Clay-Flores and her team kicked off Fiesta with a food drive in exchange for our Fiesta medal at the Precinct 1 Satellite Office on Pleasanton Rd. We received enough non-perishable items to fill over 20 boxes. The Spurs Coyote also came to bring some Fiesta cheer to those that were stopping by with their donations! It was a great opportunity for the community to participate in helping donate food to our children and families in the neighboring ISD schools. The food donations were given to the South San CareZone Pantry and the South Side ISD pantry. Thanks to Acadian Ambulance Service for sponsoring the medals.
