A Bexar County Jury on Friday sentenced a local man to 18 years in prison for the shooting death of his stepfather.
Evidence showed that on March 5, 2021, Mark Ramos and his wife, who is Jarren Garcia’s mother, had been arguing in their living room. Garcia, 20, came into the room and started fighting with Ramos. They continued to argue and a few minutes later, Garcia went into his bedroom to retrieve a handgun. Garcia’s mother did everything she could to stop her son from shooting but Garcia continued, firing off one round above his mother’s head, hitting Ramos. Garcia then followed Ramos outside and shot him five more times. Ramos died an hour later.
“There are so many ways this crime could have been avoided. Ultimately, this defendant chose to bring a gun to end the argument by firing several times at his stepfather. In the process, the defendant could have also seriously hurt or even killed his mother. This defendant’s actions caused permanent harm to his whole family, and especially the family of Mr. Ramos,” said Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales.
Assistant District Attorneys Kristen Mulliner and Oscar Pena of the Family Violence Division prosecuted this case in the 175th District Court. The San Antonio Police Department investigated the crime.
