A San Antonio man was sentenced to 29 years in prison after he pled guilty to murder and aggravated robbery.

Joe Albert Gover, 27, pled guilty to his role in the June 26, 2011, death of Benjamin Briones. Briones was hit, kicked and struck with a bat during a fight. While the crime happened in 2011, Gover was not arrested for the crime until 2020. Gover also pled guilty to a separate charge of aggravated robbery of an Uber driver in 2019.

“The Briones family has finally received justice for their loved one’s death. After ten years, this defendant may have thought he had gotten away with murder, but this sentencing should make it clear to him that the law is relentless in its pursuit of justice,” said District Attorney Joe Gonzales.

These cases were prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Jason Wolff of the Criminal Trial Division in the 437th District Court. The San Antonio Police Department investigated the crimes.

“The SAPD worked tirelessly for a decade to solve this murder. Thanks to them, we were able to secure this conviction,” said Wolff.

Gover must serve at least one half of his sentence before his first eligibility for parole.
