Former S.A. teacher sentenced to prison for having sex with student

Bexar County Jail booking photo for Jose HernandezA former San Antonio teacher has been sentenced to prison after admitting he had sex with a student.

Jose Eduardo Hernandez, 45, pled guilty to sexual assault of a child Tuesday in the 144th District Court. Evidence showed in 2019 Hernandez, a Lanier High School history teacher and softball coach, took a child younger than 17 to a motel where they had sex during school hours. The victim said this happened more than 10 times.

Judge Michael Mery sentenced Hernandez to six years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Institutional Division.

“Students look up to their teachers and coaches. Parents trust them with their children. This type of crime forever changes these young victims. I am hopeful that this resolution gives the victim closure,” said Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales.

This case was investigated by the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. It was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Oscar Salinas of the Public Integrity and Cyber Crime Division.

“This defendant abused his authority and took advantage of a student who looked up to him. This sentence should send a message to anyone in a position of trust that we will not allow this in Bexar County,” Salinas said.

Upon his release from prison, Hernandez will have to register as a sex offender.
