The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office offers a Forensic Pathology Fellowship Program accredited by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education. The goal of the fellowship program is to produce physicians who can function competently and independently as medicolegal investigators.
Implicit in this goal is the ability to perform excellent autopsy examinations and to interpret the findings gained from them. Equally important, however, is the ability to integrate investigative, toxicologic, and other findings into the totality of the investigation, and to formulate cogent, rational, and defensible cause and manner of death opinions. An understanding of the absolute necessity and responsibility for integrity, honesty, and impartiality is a necessary component of this goal. As important as technical and philosophical expertise is to the training of a forensic pathologist, so are the administrative and managerial aspects of the field. The goal is for the fellow to understand the role of the medical examiner in society; the standards of professional practice and accreditation of death investigation systems; and the features, characteristics, and requirements of a well-run Medical Examiner's Office.
