Employment

Minimum Requirements

All Forensic Scientist positions require, at a minimum, a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree from an accredited college or university in:

  • Biology,
  • Chemistry,
  • Forensic Science,
  • Natural Science or,
  • A closely related field

Position Competition

Competition for Forensic Scientist positions can be extremely competitive. Many selected candidates have a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Forensic Science and a B.S. in 1 of the sciences. A degree in Criminal Justice in not considered a substitution for a B.S. degree in science.

Public Information and Records Requests

Requests for information pursuant to the Texas Public Information Act (PIA), Texas Government Code Section 5521 should be submitted via the Bexar County Public Information Request Center: www.bexar.org/openrecords 

All requests are reviewed by the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office for statutory exceptions. Records included in a PIA request will not be provided:

  • If records include identifying information of a victim or juvenile
  • If there is an open investigation
  • If there is active judicial proceedings
  • If the request originates from or is on the behalf of an inmate of a Texas correctional facility Section 552.028:
    Request for Information From Incarcerated Individual. (a) A governmental body is not required to accept or comply with a request for information from:
    • An individual who is imprisoned or confined in a correctional facility
    • An agent of that individual, other than that individual's attorney when the attorney is requesting information that is subject to disclosure under this chapter

In the event that Bexar County asserts an exception, no response to the PIA will be forthcoming.
